Release Blitz and Book Review : Twisted Circles by Claire Contreras

Book Review // Twisted Circles by Claire

2.5 Stars 🌟

Twisted Circles is the 2nd book in the Secret Society series but can be read as a standalone. It is a suspense/mystery, secret society college romance that deals with some interesting and difficult topics but unfortunately I found this book to be very underwhelming.

This is definitely a book that works best going into blindly and I can see a lot of people enjoying this one but sadly I did not connect to the story or the characters at all. It felt like the story was trying to go in a bunch of different directions and included some solid and intriguing topics like mental health, sociology, sexual assult, the use of power and manupulation in the workforce, race, culture, religion, sexism, and inequalities. There was a lot of other agenda type situations that came up and even though all topics are interesting and important I feel if the story had focused on one major topic and really delved into it, it would've given me more time to connect with the story as a whole. It just felt like too much was thrown in just for the sake of it and anytime I tried to connect with something another thing was thrown in.

This book had a lot of potential but in the end was just an ok read for me. Nothing really shocked or wowed me but there were definitely parts of the story I enjoyed more than others and had the story stayed on one particular path but intricately woven the build up of the society in with that (I can't really say what the specific topic is as it would be a spoiler) then I think this would've been the book for me. I also wish the book had spent more time on setting up the society like it had in book one, even though this was set in a completely different secret society than the one in half truths that book did a better job a world building.

It was very light on the romance aspect with the Male MC Adam really only feeling like he was there for a bit of eye candy and to add a bit of steam though as the romance felt a little flat to me and honestly I would've prefered if it wasnt included at all and was just friends working together to solve the mystery or if the romance was built up and focused on more but that's just my opinion.

I liked Eva's character and I liked Adam's character but together there just wasnt enough there for me to believe their relationship or connection. Also Adam's character didn't make sense as he was supposedly the president of the society yet up until now we are meant to believe he had no idea what was happening and that he was purposely left clueless this whole time even though it seemed to me he was a very perceptive and smart guy so the fact he was in the dark marority of the story and didn't even question it was a little contradicting and didn't feel genuine. Also a lot of the time Eva felt naive and too trusting while not being trusting at all. Like you would think she would keep some of her findings to herself but I felt like she gave in and told/trusted more people than she really should've.

There was also a secondary character thrown in late in the book and honestly other than being there for the purpose of a number I really didn't enjoy their introduction as like most of the book we weren't given enough time to connect and adjust before it moved on I didn't like how felt messily tied in.

I really enjoy how the author included a bit at the end explaining where her inspiration for a lot of the plot came from and again all very fascinating yet disturbing topics/situations but again I wish the story had focused on 1 thing and really took its time to perfect it. This is all just my opinion and I do think most would enjoy this story and if you enjoy good psychological based mystery then give this one a go

Twisted Circles by New York Times bestselling author, Claire Contreras, is now live!

When someone tells you who you are, do you believe them?

The first question the cops asked me was if anything out of the ordinary happened to me lately.

When I woke up this morning in the room of a mental institution I couldn't remember a thing - not my name nor how I got there. Not how I left or how I ended up in that interrogation room.

The only thing I knew came from the contents inside my bag. A wallet, a student ID, a key that opened an unknown door, and two notebooks.

They tell me my name. It matches my IDs.

They tell me my story. I shut my eyes and try to piece it together, but can't.

They tell me why they picked me up in the first place. They thought I was my sister. My brain stays stuck there. I try to rewind and fast-forward, as if my memories were on a videotape, but it's no use. I can't recall having a sister.

They put me back in the car and drop me off in front of a mansion they call The Manor and I discover what the mysterious key in my backpack opens the front door, and just as quickly wish I'd never unlocked it at all.

Twisted Circles is a complete standalone that takes place in the same "world" as Half-Truths.
